Guest opinion: Erin Henninger and Jennifer Bolser: Veterinary technicians and veterinarians oppose Proposition 129
Since 2020, Colorado’s veterinary community and lawmakers have collaborated to address the demand for more veterinary professionals to meet Colorado’s animal healthcare needs. The problem was analyzed from all angles, searching for solutions and identifying unintended consequences. We found the key is to ensure veterinarians employ veterinary technicians (RVTs) and veterinary technician specialists (VTSs) more effectively and expansively. To accomplish this, laws were passed to license RVTs and expand their work. Now the proponents of Proposition 129 have abandoned these collaborative efforts by proposing an unnecessary law that will increase regulation, increase costs for technician career advancement and increase the risks to Colorado pets.
